Over the years, Australia has been struck with several catastrophic events including extensive overland flooding. One of the more recent and devastating events occurring in 2011, Mother Nature wreaked havoc in Queensland leaving 35 dead and over 200,000 people affected by the flood. Damage costs came to a total of around $2.38 billion. Fast forward to 2019, the situation isn’t any better.
However, since floods can happen anywhere, it’s not really a matter of if floods will occur but rather when. As such, it is essential that you learn how to reduce your risks during and after the floods—before it’s too late.
There is nothing more important to Claim Assist than you and your business and employee safety. Our flooding solutions are designed to help you prepare, reduce and altogether avoid any risks that could harm your life and cause damage to your assets or property, leaving you with physical and financial losses.
But first—what exactly is flooding?
The standard definition of flood as introduced in June 2012 by the Australian regulations refers to flood as:
The covering of normally dry land by water that has escaped or been released from the normal confines of: any lake, or any river, creek or other natural watercourse, whether or not altered or modified; or any reservoir, canal, or dam.
Claim Assist understands that majority of deaths happening during flash floods occur when the victims are in vehicles or other automobiles. This is when people are driving on roads with no indications that the road or bridge ahead is swept away.
Generally, approximately 20% of flooding occurs in areas that are not even susceptible to floods. This is because flooding can be caused by a number of ways including storm surges, dam/river overflows, clogged drainage and heavy rains that cause flash floods.
While having flood insurance coverage today is certainly a no-brainer, can be sure that your house or business and their contents will be protected. How about your safety? Ideally, insurance alone isn’t enough.
So, the next time it floods, what should you do? Well, just call Claim Assist. It’s the reason we exist.
Floods are unpredictable and dangerous, before a flood occurs, there are a few common sense measures you can take to minimise your exposure to injuries and property damage. The list below outlines a few steps you can take to prepare for any flooding emergency.
This kit should have enough provisions for your household to survive on for at least three days. Other essential inclusions in the kit are a NOAA weather radio for warnings and information and battery-powered torches as well as water and first-aid supplies. You can also include any valuable mementos you wish to protect from loss or damage.
When the storm surges in, you can be sure things like plant/flower pots, shades or kids’ trampolines could become harmful projectiles. All loose objects should be kept away in your garage and heavier ones fastened down and be covered. Overhanging tree branches near your home should also be cut.
Check your roof & clean the gutters
Loose or damaged tiles or corrugated sheets on your roof should be firmly secured so it doesn’t become a projectile in enhancing the risk of floods to your home. Ensure your gutters and downpipes have no blockages or a pile-up of debris. These can encourage flooding during heavy rainfall.
Construct Barriers
If considered feasible, you can construct barriers to prevent flood waters from going into the building. Openings in walls within the garage should also be sealed with waterproof compounds.
And finally…. Stay Indoors
During flooding, it’s safer to stay out of danger’s way as you listen to updates on weather. When you finally get outside, steer clear of fallen electricity lines.
